Christopher Clarkson developed modern conservation methods and ethics in the UK and designed the model based on the limp vellum bindings after the 1966 Florence floods. He noted that Medieval limp vellum bindings have protected their books better than any other bindings. It is a tough and durable material yet flexible. He experimented with creating a non-adhesive binding with soft covers and a spine lining, which would function as a strong, flexible support for the movement of the spine. Limp vellum binding is essentially a non-adhesive structure, relying upon sewing, folding, cutting, and slotting techniques as opposed to the modern form of binding which relies a great deal upon adhesives; therefore its cover can be quickly and easily removed when the text block needs further treatment (although it is very painful to imagine removing it, as inserting slips into the holes was very tricky!).
To add additional mechanical support, the book was sewn one down with three raised alum-tawed supports, and the extended kettle stitches were sewn two down. It gives the spine flexibility.
The primary endband is a structural endband, not a decorative endband. It was sewn through every gathering to give flexibility and strength to the spine.
The parchment cover was measured based on the size of the textblock.
The holes were made to accommodate slips using a Japanese screw punch and chisels. Then, laced in! It is to keep everything in place with no adhesives.
The cover extension was made to protect the textblock from being rubbed by the lace on the fore-edge. Slips were then inserted in between the floating board and the hinge paper. At last, straps were added on the fore-edge.
